Arugam Bay has a population of around 3,500 people. It comprises of three villages where farming and fishing are the main activities. Farmers in the area grow rice and rear cattle for curd and meat production. Ullae village lies in the corner of Arugamo Bay and the landforms and quiet sea around provides a perfect natural harbor for fishing. Fishing is done almost all year round hence the presence of many small boats in the village. You will definitely note the colorful life and friendly people in the village.

Pottuvil is the nearest town and has a population of 12,000 people. Muslims form the biggest population of the town. The town has well constructed villas, humble cottages, and palm huts for accommodation. It is also deemed a “cowboy-town” and you cannot miss them riding on bicycles. Liquor shops are noticeably missing in the town because of the religious faith of the majority inhabitants.Daily activities in Pottuvil and Arugam Bay begin early. Fishing boats begin going out to sea as early as 4 o’clock and it is possible to organize for a fishing expedition with the fishermen. The sun rises at 7 o’clock when early surfers begin swimming around the surf point. Surf spots in the area include Arugam Point, Pottuvil point and Crocodile Rock. Arugam Point attracts huge crowds owing to its location. Viewers are able to watch the action from a vantage point. This is also the perfect time to begin your walk along the beach or ride a bicycle inland. If you prefer watching wildlife, you can take a walk along the lagoon or drive for about 15 kilometers down south. However, you will probably meet crocodiles, wild pigs, deer and elephants nearby in the evening. Besides, it is the perfect time to watch the rich and interesting birdlife around the area.

Arugam bay has a natural beauty that remains untouched. Besides, it is located close to the largest national wildlife parks in Sri Lanka. These include the “Natural Mangrove Conservation of Pottuvil Lagoon”, “Kumana Bird Sanctuary”, “Lahugaala National Park” and “Yala National Park.” The area has also crucial cultural artifacts including cave dwellings and ancient temples. They date back to nearly 2000 years, which testify the truly cultural and historical significance of Arugam Bay. The area is unique in that there are no ethnic conflicts compared to other parts of Sri Lanka. This is despite its multiethnic composition. In deed, Arugam has an equivalent racial mix of Singhalese, Muslim and Tamil famines that coexist peacefully.
