Forming part of the Ravana Ella Wildlife Sanctuary, the source of the fall is the Bandarawela Hill Oya Reservoir, and it flows to the Kirindi Oya Reservoir.

According to legend, it is said that King Ravana (who was the king of Sri Lanka at the time) had kidnapped princess Sitha, and had hidden her in the caves behind this waterfall, now simply known as the Ravana Ella (ravana falls) Cave. At the time, the cave was surrounded with thick forests in the midst of wilderness. There is small pool which consider as queen Sitas bathed in a pool that accumulated the water falling from this waterfall.
Ravana caves is one of the most attractive place for both local and foreign tourists. Which is located rear ravana falls it’s about 1,370 m (4,490 ft) above sea level.The 25m-high Ravana Falls cascades from an oval-shaped concave rock outcrop. In the dry season, the flow of water is markedly reduced, whereas rain turns the fall into what is said to resemble an areca flower with withering petals.
